Project Overview & Goals

Citywide Housing Survey

Project Overview & Goals

The Lawrence Affordable Housing Study is an 8- to 10-month long process that will identify housing needs in our community, assess COVID’s impact on the housing market, and provide actionable strategies to improve housing equity over the coming decade. It will build on the foundations of previous Lawrence housing studies, which have found that:

  • The housing affordability gap in Lawrence is widening.

  • There is not enough housing available for low-income households.

  • Home prices have risen faster than incomes.

  • Homelessness is increasing, and the supportive housing and services currently available are stretched thin.

  • Some groups in Lawrence face special housing challenges, including renters and students.

  • Housing segregation and racial and income disparities create unequal access to housing and related resources in Lawrence.

Through a blend of data analysis and conversations with the Lawrence community, this study will explore the connections between housing, economic development, equity, neighborhood stability, and growth. It will foster a thorough understanding of Lawrence’s housing needs and the drivers for those needs, and work to share issues and ideas in ways that the broader community can easily access and understand.

This strategy is grounded in the following values:

  • Equity and Inclusion: Prioritize the voices of historically marginalized populations
  • Trust and Transparency: Engage communities with honesty, clarity, and mutual respect
  • Accessibility: Eliminate physical, financial, cultural, and linguistic barriers to participation
  • Responsiveness: Use community feedback to inform recommendations and show its impact
  • Partnership: Work with community-based organizations (CBOs) that already serve the target populations
